![]() Blissful Bedrooms is a one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization seeking to transform the bedrooms of young individuals with significant disabilities into spaces where they can experience peace, comfort, and joy. The idea was born from a special bond between Martha Gold- Dvoryadkin, physical therapist/yoga instructor at New York's PS 118 and a former student,Tamisha. "My partner Alex and I brainstormed one day on how we could bring more happiness into her life. We decided to paint and decorate her bedroom. We were amazed at the impact on her and us," said Gold-Dvoryadkin. Since 2009, Blissful Bedrooms has grown into a spirit-filled organization gathering a talented group of artists, painters, and carpenters who all volunteer their time to create magical spaces for children in need. "Our creative team comes together to design a unique room for each child. What are their favorite colors?, Who are their heroes? What are their hobbies? Several of our artists have created wall murals and original artwork for the rooms we've designed," said Gold-Dvoryadkin.
The transformed rooms are brimming with creativity, but Gold-Dvoryadkin notes other gains for the young people who have benefited."We've found that having a new room has led to confidence in having friends over their house, increasing their social circle." She also notes that what results is more important than just a revitalized room, "It is the love that goes into creating that room- the planning, imagining, and passionate energy that go into the makeovers - sometimes 20 people at a time volunteering their time and talents," said Gold-Dvoryadkin, "I believe that when we leave, that energy stays."
